  Part One

  Chapter 1

I stared up into the darkness overhead, the inky blanket of the night sky, broken only by the lights of millions of tiny stars. There was a chill on the perfumed air in the gardens, but it was still better than standing inside the cramped ballroom making small talk with people who believed only their opinions counted for anything.

I wanted to be at home, curled up on the couch with Jenson sleeping soundly in my arms. Bliss.

Instead I was here, at one of the largest business events of the year. Not because I was important and certainly not because anyone placed any value on what I had to say.

I was here because I was David Ashcroft’s wife.

Simply thinking about him made me smile. The effect he had on me, even after all this time… He was intoxicating and loving him was as easy as breathing.

“I thought I might find you out here.” His voice cut through my thoughts and I jumped as his hands slid slowly around my waist.

  “I didn’t hear you coming.”

“And after everything we’ve been through, you didn’t think it would be a good idea to take a guard outside with you?”

Wrinkling my nose in displeasure I turned to face him.

“Don’t give me that look, Carrie, you know I’m right.”

His face was half concealed in darkness but I could make out the curl of his lips as he smiled at me.

“You’re not always right,” I teased, lifting my arms and wrapping them up around his neck.

He lowered his face to mine, his lips hovering just above mine. He was so close I could see the dark intensity in his gaze—it scorched along my skin, tightening things low in my belly and igniting my desire for him.

“I was right about you,” he whispered, walking me backwards until I felt the hard surface of the wall that surrounded the garden against my bare shoulders.

David dropped his head, and I could feel his mouth as he tasted my neck, the rasp of his stubble against my skin making my knees weak. His hands slid down my arms before he jerked them up and over my head, pinning me against the wall by my wrists.

He only needed one hand to hold me in place, his other free to slide down the side of my face to my neck. His hand continued its downward journey over my chest to the curve of my breasts.

I gasped, my mind going completely blank. There was no thought outside of what he was doing to me in that moment.

Arching up into his touch, my body ached to feel his bare skin against mine.

  Stupid dress.

It stood between my body and his and I wanted it gone.

Moments before the fact that we stood out in the very public gardens would have bothered me, but it didn’t matter to me now that David was crushed against me and pressing all of my buttons.

I moaned softly, biting down on my lower lip in an attempt to keep my desire contained as his mouth moved lower over my neck.

He splayed his hand against the side of my ribcage, his thumb gliding upwards to slide against my breast.

Despite the layers of my dress I gasped, his touch branding me as though there was nothing at all between us.

There may as well have been nothing between us; I knew his touch. And I would have known the feel of his hands against my body even if I’d been robbed of my other senses.

He grazed his teeth against my skin before slowly biting down on my shoulder.

I cried out, my eyes rolling back in my head as the pain gave way to the pleasure of giving myself over to the sensations he evoked within me.

He pushed his knee between my legs and without thinking I ground my body against his, the ache deep in my belly growing and spreading. It took on a life of its own and I whimpered softly as David circled my nipple through the fabric of my dress.

His hand left my breast and I felt its loss keenly, but the feeling passed as soon as my mind registered what he was doing.

David let his hand drop to my thigh and he was slowly bunching the fabric up in his hand, the cold night air creeping higher and higher against my fevered skin.

Reaching the hem of the dress, David pushed his hand against my inner thigh, and the look of possessive desire that filled his eyes as he pushed his fingers against the delicate scrap of silk weakened my knees.

“What have I told you about wearing knickers?”

I opened my mouth to answer him but he chose that moment to rip the scrap of silk from my body. I gasped, the momentary burn of the fabric against my skin stealing my smart answer.

“You deserve to be punished, always disobeying your Master’s commands…” He tutted, his fingers sliding against the entrance to my sex.

I struggled against his grip, the ache in my body had become an all-consuming need and I didn’t want to fight it. I wanted to give in to what he was offering me but I needed him to take it further.

“Tell me what you want,” he whispered against my skin, his hand playing against my body, teasing me with each tantalising brush of his fingers.

“I want you, please, David,” I moaned, my words running into each other as he teased me.

The sound of voices and laughter carried to my ears. They were going to find us pressed against the wall, my dress bunched up around my waist as I begged David to bring me to release.

He chuckled softly, his warm breath caressing the skin of my neck as he continued to slowly trail lazy circles around the entrance to my body.

I was going to explode, the fear of exposure mingling with my
intense need for what I knew he could give me.

“David, they’ll find us.” My voice was pained as I strained to control my urge to grind my body down against his hand.

“Let them, I know what you want,” he said, an edge to his voice.

Several things happened together: he chose that moment to thrust his fingers deep into my body, finding my sweet spot instantly, he bit down against my neck once more and his other hand clamped down across my mouth, stifling my scream.

My knees collapsed beneath me and it was David’s body that held me pinned against the wall, the rough surface of the stone digging in against my back as his fingers found a relentless rhythm inside my body.

I cried out against his hand, the intensity of the pleasure and pain sending my body hurtling towards an orgasm.

David knew how to play me like no other.

I fought against him, my body thrashing against his grip as his fingers stroked me to the brink of no return.

I could feel my lipstick smearing beneath the grip of his hand over my face, the only thing preventing the people taking a stroll through the garden from discovering us.

He moved up my neck, his mouth trailing hot, fiery kisses until I could feel his breath against my ear once more.

“Come for me, pet.” His whispered words sent me spilling down into the orgasm that washed over me.

His hand left my mouth and his lips crushed down over mine, stealing breath and cries from my lungs into his own.

Light exploded behind my eyelids as he continued to play my body like his own personal instrument. Each thrust of his fingers, each spiralling circle against the sweet spot inside me had the muscles of my body clench down on him.

But I wanted more, I craved more. I wanted to feel him inside me, to feel him spill his pent-up desire.

David’s kiss was punishing. He sucked my lower lip between his teeth, his tongue tangling with mine.

The world went black, my lungs screaming for air as my orgasm continued to swallow everything I was, everything I had been, until there was nothing left and I slumped into his grip.

  Chapter 2

“Carrie, can you hear me?” David’s voice against my neck drew me back from the darkness.

I climbed towards the sound of his voice, the feeling returning to my body as it pulsed and tingled with the aftermath of what he had done to me.

I giggled, as I opened my eyes and stared up into David’s concerned face.

“I’m not sure what you find so funny about passing out in my arms. I didn’t know what the hell had happened. One minute you were enjoying it and the next…” He trailed off, the irritation in his voice only making me giggle harder.

“I’m sorry, I know I shouldn’t laugh but your face is just so serious over something so silly.”

“Carrie, I don’t find you blacking out in my arms silly. You’re pregnant, what if there’s something wrong?”

There was a fear in his eyes that I’d never seen before and it killed the laughter on my lips.

Reaching up to him, I cupped the side of his face with my hand and David turned his face in towards my palm and dropped a soft kiss against my skin.

“David, there’s nothing wrong, I was so caught up in what we were doing, trying to be silent, I forgot to breathe. That’s all, there’s nothing wrong with me or the baby.”

He shot me a sceptical look, his eyes narrowing as he studied my face.

“Are you sure that’s all it was? It’s never happened before.”

“We’ve never come so close to getting caught before, it was”—I shivered as I thought about what he’d done to me—“a heady experience.”

A slow smile crept onto his face, and the fear I’d seen there melted away to be replaced by a sort of pride.

“It was so good I made you pass out? Well that’s a new string to add to my bow. I’ll have to try it again, under more controlled conditions where I can do whatever I want to you.” He chuckled, a very masculine sound that raised the hairs on the back of my neck as a shiver of desire trailed down my spine.

“You’re cold, we should go back inside,” he said, slipping out of his tuxedo jacket and draping it around my shoulders.

I lifted my hand to my lips, my fingers coming away sticky with my smeared lipstick.

“David, I can’t go back into the ballroom, I’m a mess,” I said, my voice filled with mounting horror.

The minute the other guests saw me, they’d know what we’d just done in the gardens. And now that I wasn’t under the influence of David’s touch having anyone discover what we’d been up to was the very last thing I wanted.

I could already imagine it plastered all over the newspapers and magazines.

“As much as I want to just leave and get you home, we can’t. They’re presenting awards soon and someone nominated me for something or other…” He trailed off.

“You’re getting an award? Why didn’t you tell me, what’s it for?”

“I don’t know if I’m getting one, it’s something ridiculous, I didn’t bother asking. I just know I have to be here in case.”

“David, it’s not nothing, how can you not care?”

“I’ve been to hundreds of these events, I’ve been nominated for awards before and they don’t mean anything. It’s just more shallow tripe and they always go to whoever donated the largest amount of money to throw the gala. It’s not about the work, or who deserves it.”

His expression was closed and I couldn’t get a clear read on what he was actually feeling about the situation.

“Is there another entrance to this place, or somewhere I can go to get cleaned up?” I said, choosing to change the subject rather than argue about it.

David had obviously made his mind up about the awards and I wasn’t going to be able to change it.

“I’m sure we’ll find some way in so we can keep your reputation intact.” He grinned and held his hand up, my ripped knickers dangling from his fingers, fingers that had brought me screaming to orgasm just moments before. “It’s a pity the same can’t be said for your panties.”

I felt heat creeping up my face and I knew for a fact that I was blushing to my roots.

David’s smile was wolfish as he reached over and pushed them into the top pocket of his tuxedo jacket. He drew me in against his body and wrapped his arm around my shoulders before leading me towards the side of the building.

  Chapter 3

Standing in front of the mirror in the private bathroom I stared at my reflection with mounting horror.

How the hell was I supposed to fix this mess?

It had taken me hours to arrange my hair in the complicated chignon and all of that was now completely ruined. My hair hung around my face in loose curls. I couldn’t have been further from the sophisticated style I’d been going for.

I looked like a woman who’d been ravaged in a garden.

A blush climbed my neck and spread up into my cheeks.

That was exactly what I was, and David had done a very thorough job of ravaging me. When I closed my eyes I could still feel the rhythm of his fingers as he’d slid them in and out of my body.

I groaned and bit down on my lip as I gripped the edge of the sink. Remembering the things he’d done to me in the garden wasn’t going to make me presentable.

Leaning in towards the mirror I peered at my shoulder and the red imprint David had left on my pale skin after he’d bitten me.

Opening the small bag I’d brought with me I stared mournfully down at the contents. I hadn’t planned ahead for this and on one hand it was probably naive of me.

Ever since the ordeal with Rachel had been resolved we were closer than ever and David had taken every opportunity to show me just how much he desired me. And I wouldn’t change a moment of it, but it definitely complicated things when this was the outcome.

I smiled to myself as I began cleaning up my smeared lipstick. If people noticed my changed appearance and the bite marks on my shoulder I was just going to h
ave to shrug it off. I loved David and he loved me; my hair and make-up were smeared, but only because the man I adored hadn’t been able to keep his hands off me.

There were plenty of couples who would have killed to have a relationship like the one I had with David.

I reapplied my lipstick and then tucked up as much of my hair as I could. Many of the hair pins had been lost and the weight of my hair made it almost impossible to completely pin up the loose ends but I was somewhat satisfied with the end result.

Without a backwards look in the mirror I swallowed back my nervousness and headed for the door.

Stepping out into the hall, David caught my hand and swung me around to face him.

“You’re beautiful,” he said, dipping his face to mine to plant one chaste kiss against my lips.

“Everyone is going to know what we were doing the minute they see your teeth marks on my shoulder.” I grinned up at the red stain of my lipstick against his lips. “That and you’re wearing my lipstick.”

“And I’ll wear it proudly, I don’t care who knows what we were doing. It’s not my fault that I’m married to the most irresistible woman in the world. I was simply doing my job as a good husband. Any man in my position would have done the same.”

“Flattery will get you everywhere,” I answered and laughed as we started down the hall.

“It’s not flattery if it’s the truth, Carrie, and remember, everywhere is already mine…” His eyes darkened and I could see the promise of what he would do to me once we were alone glittering in his eyes.

The sound of someone making an announcement from the ballroom drew his attention away from me and I watched his shoulders visibly tighten.

“Sounds like it’s getting started, are you ready?”

I nodded and squeezed his hand softly, his eyes drifting back to mine.
